Appendicitis must be diagnosed and appendectomy should be done. In order to prevent appendix gangrene or other complications such as peritonitis, phelegmon and abscess. Since sonography as an accurate diagnosis method to evaluate pathological processes has been accepted for every organ of the body, so among all diagnostic measurments, it along with other clinical symptoms has an immense role to dignose appendicitis. The purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity and specificity of sonography to the diagnosis of appendicitis in suspected patients referred to Ashayer hospital in khorramabad in 2005. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included all suspected individuals with acute appendicitis referred to the hospital during 5 months. The data gathered through a questionnaire, physical examination and surgery done by specialist and the sonography results which were compared with pathoelogy results. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and SPSS software. Comparing the results of sonography and pathology, the positive and negative cases were recognized. The sesitivity and specificity of sonography was recognized too. Results: Among 131 suspected cases, 6 cases had negative sonography,their symptoms improved,so they were cured and were excluded from the study. Among 125 patients, 88 cases (%70.4) had positive sonography and 37 (%29.6) had negative sonography. Through comparison between results of sonography and pathology , 72 cases were true positive patients, 16 cases were false positive patients. 12 cases were true negative patients. 25 cases were false negative patients. Also the sensitivity and specificity were 74% and 43% respectively. Conclusion: As the study suggests, sonography before sugery can help and leads to definite diagnosis in suspected patients to appendicitis and it can prevent unnecessary surgeries, as well as it can prevent delay in treatment and related complications . }, URL = {http://yafte.lums.ac.ir/article-1-639-en.html}, eprint = {http://yafte.lums.ac.ir/article-1-639-en.pdf}, journal = {scientific magazine yafte}, doi = {}, year = {2012} }
