Background: Anterior loop is an important anatomical structure that is vital in mandible surgeries, such as in placement of osseointegrated implants, mandible fracture surgery, and orthognathic surgery. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency and position of the anterior ring of the mandibular canal using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, 450 CBCT images from the archives of Tabriz Dental Faculty, Tabriz, Iran, were analysed by NNT viewer version (2.17). Digital radiographic images were evaluated in semi-dark room in cross-sectional and axial sections. The collected data was analysed in SPSS (version 24) statistical software, and Chi-square test, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney tests were used as well.
Results: Based on the results obtained, The prevalence rate of anterior loop in the Iranian population was 59.8% on the left side and 58.2% on the right side. The prevalence of left (P=0.475) and right (P=0.168) anterior loop showed no significant difference in men and women. The mean distance of the anterior ring from the mental foramen on the left side (P=0.002) and right side (P=0.016) was significantly higher in men than in women.
Conclusion: Considering that the anterior ring of the inferior alveolar nerve is at risk during implantation, CBCT images are necessary to identify the position of the anterior ring to maintain a sufficient safety distance.
