Background & Objectives: With increasing age, chronic inflammation and metabolic disorders increase significantly, which can lead to cardiovascular diseases. This study investigated the effect of 8 weeks of high-intensity interval training with curcumin consumption on NF-KB and NFR2 factors in the heart tissue of aged rats.
Materials & Methods: In this study, 35 aged male Wistar rats with an average weight of 250-300 g divided into five groups: healthy control group, aged control, aged + training, training + curcumin supplement and training + curcumin supplement. To induce aging, rats injected with D-galactose at a dose of 500 mg/kg for eight weeks. HIIT training consisted of a 10-minute warm-up, followed by three running stages at an intensity of % 80-90 Vmax for 4 minutes and rest for 3 minutes. Curcumin supplement were given to rats for 8 weeks at a dose of 50 mg/kg. After the intervention period, heart tissue samples extracted and the gene expression levels of NF-KB and NFR2 factors evaluated using Real-time-PCR. Data analysis performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test.
Results: The results showed that senescence induction led to a significant increase in NF-KB and a significant decrease in NFR2 (P<0/05), and the combination of HIIT and curcumin reversed these effects and decreased NF-KB expression and increased NRF2 expression (P <0/05).
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that HIIT training and curcumin consumption lead to a reduction in inflammation in the heart tissue of aged rats by inhibiting the NF-KB and NFR2 signaling pathways. Therefore, the combination of curcumin and HIIT training can be used as an effective strategy to reduce inflammation and increase antioxidant defense in the heart tissue of the elderly.
