Abstract

Introduction: Studies concerning the biology and ecology of scorpions in Iran are very limited , and these studies must be begun with identification of habitats and funa of scorpions of each region in the country and completed with biological and ecological charactristics .The aim of this study was to identify and determine the funa of Lorestan scorpions. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study five regions of Khorramabad with a 25-kilometer distance from the city , were chosen for caching scorpion in the spring and summer. Totally 52 scorpions were caught from these regions . To determine their food habits, different arthropoda including Blatta orientalis (eastern coac roach) ,Blattela germanica (germany coac roach) , larva of butterfly and adult house fly were provided for them in the form of laboratory feeding . Findings : According to the results from 52 caught scorpions 29 belonged to the Buthidae family and 23 belonged to the Scorpionidae family . Population of Buthid and Scorpionidae family in Khorramabad is 56% and 44% respectively. The scorpions, nutrition in the lab was mostly house fly. Conclusion: Results shows that most of the scorpions belonged to the Buthidae family and Buthuthus Snulcyi kind which have painful stings which affect on nervous system , and are very dangerous and fatal for children and aged people , so it is important to know the treatment methods to fight against their poisons.

Abstract Background: Despite the importance of functional-performance deficits in athletes with history of ankle sprain few, studies have been carried out in this area. The aim of this research was to study relationship between previous ankle sprains and functional-performance deficits in athletes. Materials and methods: The subjects were 40 professional athletes selected through random sampling among volunteer participants in soccer, basketball, volleyball and handball teams of Lorestan province. The subjects were divided into 2 groups: Injured group (athletes with previous ankle sprains) and healthy group (athletes without previous ankle sprains). In this descriptive study we used Functional-performance tests (figure 8 hop test and side hop test) to determine ankle deficits and limitations. They participated in figure 8 hop test including hopping in 8 shape course with the length of 5 meters and side hop test including 10 side hop repetitions in course with the length of 30 centimeters. Time were recorded via stopwatch. Results: After data gathering and assessing information distributions, Pearson correlation was used to assess relationships, and independent T test to assess differences between variables. Finally the results showed that there is a significant relationship between previous ankle sprains and functional-performance deficits in the athletes. Conclusion: The athletes who had previous ankle sprains indicated functional-performance deficits more than healthy athletes in completion of mentioned functional-performance tests. The functional-performance tests (figure 8 hop test and side hop test) are sensitive and suitable to assess and detect functional-performance deficits in athletes. Therefore we can use the figure 8 hop and side hop tests for goals such as prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of ankle sprains without spending too much money and time.

Abstract

Acute renal failure ( ARF ) can increase mortality and morbidity , hospital stay and costs . So ,carefull information about frequency distribution , mortality and morbidity , male : female ratio and other characteristics of ARF in ICU have important role to prevent and manage patients and to predict equipments and trainees personel . Therefor this evaluation considered to be necessary for above evidence Materials and Methods: In this analytic - descriptive study , 1383 patients were investigated in surgery ICU during 1996 - 2000. Findings were collected based on age , sex , admission cause , etiology , mortality and morbidity . Datas were analyzed statistically Results: Frequency of ARF was 25.9 percent . The most common cause of ARF was prerenal factors (57.9 percent) that include : surgery drainage , bleeding and trauma . The most frequence of age group was > 70 y (25.6 percent) and the least was 31 - 40 years old . Total mean age of patients were 36.5 19 y and about ARF were 52 5.8 y (P < 0.05). Males (30.3 percent) were more than females (19.9 percent) (P < 0.05) . Mortality rate in ARF was 57.9 percent and in other patients was 12.8 percent (P < 0.05) Conclusion: Relative frequency percentage of ARF indidcates its high frequency among hospitalized patients in ICU . Incidence of ARF increase with age and is similar to previous studies . It is probably due to underlying diseases and reduction of renal function in this age group . Males were more than female because of increasing trauma and surgery in this group . The most common cause of prerenal ARF was large amount of blood and fluids loss . Mortality rate was more than previous studies and was statistically significant . It is probably evidences of injury severity and co-existing disturbances . Because of high incidence of ARF in ICU it is necessary to maintain patients hemdynamic status , infuse enough fluids , adjust drug doses , … for immediate diagnosis and treatment of these patients.

Abstract

The main goals of fluid therapy in brain edema include: maintenance of perfusion pressure, prevention of extreme osmolarity changes and hyperglycemia. In some studies, monitol has increased plasma osmolarity and decreased brain water content in dose related. Another research showed that hypertonic saline has led to decrease ICP because of its osmotic effect .Plasma Na, K are related parameters of osmolarity. This study was performed to assess serum sodium, potassium and osmolarity in head injury severities. Materials and Methods: In this prospective experimental – observational study, fity seven patients admitted to neurosurgery ICU were investigated . GCS and serum Na, K were checked at 6 am daily for 4 days. The serum osmolarity was calculated with formula(osm = 2Na + BuN/2.8 + G/18 ). The patients were divided into 3 and 4 groups based on GCS and day of hospitalization. In each 24 hours, there were GCS= 13-15 as mild, GCS =9-12 as moderate and GCS ≤ 8 as severe groups of head injury. Then the data were analyzed statistically. Results: Number of patients, from severe to mild head injury decreased during 4 days. For mean osmolarity there was significant difference between moderate, compared with mild and severe groups (p = 0/03)There was no significant difference for mean serum electrolytes among all groups. Conclusion: There were no relationship between mean serum osmolarity, electrolytes and GCS,which may indictes influence of other therapies on osmolarity,ABG condition, patients’positioning and temperature, need to mechanical ventilation, and staying blood samples in laboratory environment

Abstract

Background : Hard ticks ( Ixodidae family) transmit Arboviruses, bacteria and parasites to human and animals. One of the most important viruses that ticks transmit from animals to human is Crimean-Congo haemorhagic fever virus, the fact that its importance has been proved. So the study of fauna of ticks in the area, for the control and prevention of the mentioned disease, is of great importance Materials and Methods: Ticks were collected from bodies of sheep, goats and cows in 40 villages of Khorramabad district and using Russian hard ticks species identification and other keys, their species were identified. Results: Eight hundred livestocks were examined and 3156 ticks were collected from their bodies, of which 2319 ticks (73%) collected from sheep, 823 (26%) from goats and 14 (1%)from cows. Among them 4 genus including Hyaloma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis and Rypicephalus were identified. Three species of genus Hyaloma (Hyaloma anatolicum, H.asiaticum, and H.marginatum), one species of genus Dermacentor (Dermacentor marginatus), one species of Genus Haemaphysalis( Haemaphysalis sulcata), one species of genus Rypicephalus (Rypicephalus sanguineous) were identified. The dominant species was Rypicephalus sanguineous. Argas persicus was identified as only soft tick in the area that were collected from fowl bodies. Conclusion: In this study four genus and six species of hard ticks (Ixodidae family) were collected from livestocks and only one species was collected from fowls. Due to importance of ticks as vectors of diseases to humans, control of these external parasites and campaign against them are important tools in prevention of vector – borne diseases.

Abstract

Background: Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion causes structural and functional damage in the hippocampus. exercise pre-conditioning can be an effective way to prevent or reduce the risk of stroke. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 8 weeks of Pre-conditioning exercise on treadmill on diminution of the neurons of CA1 region of hippocampus and expression of TNF-α protein following cerebral ischemia/ reperfusion in male rats.
Materials and Methods: Twenty and four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of sham, training, ischemia and ischemia+ training. The rats in training group were trained to run on a treadmill 5 days a week, for 8 weeks before induction of ischemia. Ischemia was induced by blocking both common carotid arteries for 45 minutes. Hematoxylin and eosinophil (H&E) staining and immunohistochemical method were used to neuronal death, and protein expression respectively.
Results: The number of apoptosis neurons in the CA1 area were significantly increased in the ischemia group, compared with the sham and training group (p<0.05). Also, in the ischemia+ training group number of cell death and Expression of TNF-α were significantly lower than ischemia group. (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Regarding on the results, it seems that exercise pre-conditioning on treadmill, as a neuroprotective stimulant, would have protective effects against cell death and inflammation.

Abstract

Background: Hypothyroidism among patients with endocrine glands is the most common disease after diabetes. In hypothyroidism, the secretion of the hormone that regulates the metabolism is reduced. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hydro-alcoholic ginger extract as the drug to increase the metabolism on the amount of glucose in normal and hypothyroidism rats.
Materials and Methods: To perform this test, 60 male Wistar rats were divided into six groups, and the control group did not receive any material. The controls received 0.1 mL of saline solution for 24 days. The experimental group 1 received 60 mg/kg of methimazole for 24 days. The experimental group 2 received ginger hydroalcoholic extracts of 400 mg/kg, experimental groups 3 and 4 received methimazole 60 mg/kg and simultaneously ginger hydroalcoholic extract with doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg for 24 days, respectively. Moreover, 48 h after the first injection, anesthesia was performed using ether, and the blood sample of their heart was collected. The amount of glucose was measured by an autoanalyzer machine. The collected data was analyzed in SPSS software using ANOVA.
Results: There was a significant increase in the amount of glucose in the blood sample of experimental group 1, compared to the control group. A significant decrease was observed in groups 3 and 4 after using hydro-alcoholic ginger extract.
Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be predicted that using ginger can decrease the amount of glucose in the blood of patients with hypothyroidism.
