Abstract

Background : Diabetes mellitus is one of the prevalence metabolic disorders in the worldwide. Studies have shown that fruits, vegetables and drinks that are rich in phenolic and antioxidants components may reduce cardiovascular and diabetes diseases. One of these fruits is Pomegranate that is rich in phelavonoid. Therefore, this study was designed to determine pomegranate juice effect on fast blood sugar, lipid profile, anthropometry, total antioxidant capacity and blood pressure in diabetic patients.

Materials and Methods: In the present study, 50 patients with diabetes aged 30-50 were recruited into the study and randomly assigned into 2 groups:1) intervention group (n=25) that fed 240cc pomegranate juice daily, 2) control group (n=25) that fed 240cc water daily. Weight, hip circumstance, waist circumstance, lipid profile (HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, TC) glucose, HbA1C, GPX, total antioxidant capacity, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured at the baseline and end of 8 weeks.

Results: Insulin resistance, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, body weight, hip circumstance, waist circumstance decreased significantly and GPX increased in intervention group whereas pomegranate juice had no significant effect on glucose, HbA1C, lipid profile and total antioxidant capacity.

Conclusion: These findings indicate that beneficial effect of pomegranate juice on insulin resistance, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, body weight, hip circumstance, waist circumstance, GPX

Abstract

Background: free radicals produced as a result of heavy training exercise especially oxygen species (ROS) damage to body tissues Which can be prevent from this by consuming antioxidant substances timely. The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) peel hydro alcoholic on reduced of oxidative stress induced by an exhaustive exercise.

Materials and Methods: Thirty two weight-matched male Wistar rats were evenly divided into: 1) control: received saline (0.2 ml saline/ rat) by oral administration via epigastric tube. 2) Received oral administration of 200 mg/kg pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract (PPHE200). 3) Received oral administration of 250 mg/kg Pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract (PPHE250). 4) Received oral administration of vitamin E (vit E) 5 mg/kg. Animals were submitted to swimming exhaustive exercise stress for an 8-week. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for serum. Serum samples were analyzed for paraoxonase-1(PON-1) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities and nitric oxide levels.

Results: Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activities serum were significantly increases in PPHE200 (23.03±1.47), PPHE250 (23.59±1.98) and vit E (25.38±2.65) than in the control (18.57±1.380) (p<0.05).In PPHE200 (32.76±9.97) ،PPHE250 (31.45±6.05) and vit E (24.94±4.65) treated animals was determined in serum where myeloperoxidase activities reduced significantly compared with control (40.70±6.14) (p<0.05). Levels of Nitric oxide levels were significantly lower in PPHE 200 (46.59±2.48), PPHE250 (40.27±2.62) and vit E (36.25±3.82) treated than in control (47.18±5.36) (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Results indicated that Pomegranate peel hydro alcoholic extract supplementations can strength antioxidant defense system and anti-inflammatory induced by exhaustive exercise.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the first leading cause of cancer death (25.5%) among women across the world. Oxidative stress and overproduction of free radicals are among the most important reasons for the progression of cancers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of aerobic exercise with pomegranate juice on Serum microRNAs levels related to the oxidant/antioxidant system of women recovering from breast cancer.
Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 40 women recovering from breast cancer with a mean age of 42.45±1.95 were randomly assigned into four equal groups (n=10), including control, pomegranate juice, aerobic exercise, and aerobic-pomegranate. The aerobic and aerobic-pomegranate groups performed eight 60-90-min sessions of exercises three times a week with an intensity of 50% to 70% of the target heart rate. The pomegranate juice group received 100 cc of juice before each training session. Blood samples were collected 48 h before and after the intervention. Oncogenic microRNAs, such as miR-21 and miR-155, were assayed by RT-PCR. The obtained data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Bonferroni post hoc test at a significance level of P≤0/05.
Results: In total, eight weeks of aerobic exercise with the consumption of pomegranate juice caused a significant decrease in miR-21 (P=0.001) and miR-155 (P=0.001) levels in women recovering from breast cancer, compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Aerobic exercise and consumption of pomegranate juice simultaneously reduced oncogene microRNAs, such as miR-21 and miR-155, in women recovering from breast cancer.
