Background: Non-suicidal self-harm behaviors refer to direct and intentional behaviors of destroying body tissues without suicidal intent, which is currently considered one of the serious challenges for adolescent psychosocial health in the general population. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of emotion-focused schema therapy on cognitive flexibility and mood alexithymia in adolescents with non-suicidal self-harm behaviors.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design with a two-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population included adolescent girls with self-injurious behaviors from Isfahan mental health service centers in 1403. Thirty people were selected purposefully and based on the inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to two groups. The cognitive flexibility questionnaire and the alexithymia questionnaire were used to measure changes in dependent variables. The experimental group received 9 sessions of emotion-focused schema therapy intervention with a frequency of one session per week. The data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test.
Results: The results showed that the effectiveness of emotion-focused schema therapy on cognitive flexibility and alexithymia was positive and significant (P<0.05), and these effects remained stable in the follow-up phase only on the identification of emotions and objective thinking of the alexithymia variable.
Conclusion: Emotion-focused schema therapy was effective on cognitive flexibility and alexithymia. It is suggested that mental health professionals in the field of adolescents should use this treatment as an effective intervention to manage and improve adolescents' self-injurious behaviors.
