Background: Today, cardiovascular diseases are known as the most important cause of death in the world. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of schema therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy on emotion regulation and blood pressure.
Materials and Methods: This applied, quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test- post-test design with a heterogeneous control group. A total of 60 cardiovascular patients were randomly assigned to three groups using a convenience sampling method. Two interventions, namely schema therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy, were performed, and no training was applied to the control group. The instruments used in this study were the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and blood pressure measurement. For data analysis, a mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures (Mixed Repeated Measures ANOVA) test was used, and the significance level of the tests was considered to be 0.05. Moreover, SPSS software (version 26) was utilized for data analysis.
Results: After analyzing the required data, in general, the mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures for the reappraisal component scores (Eta=0.58, P>0.05, F=422.39), emotional suppression (Eta=0.122, P>0.05, F=3.978), and blood pressure (Eta=0.737, P>0.01, F=944.79) were significant. Based on these findings, both treatment approaches had significant differences in the mean scores of pre-tests, post-tests, and follow-ups in the three groups, compared to the control group for the variables of emotion regulation and blood pressure. Furthermore, this effect was  stable at the two-month follow-up stage. In comparing the two experimental groups, there was no significant difference between the two treatments.
Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded that both treatments have been effective in emotion regulation and blood pressure. Based on this, it is suggested to implement these treatments in similar situations.
