Background: Fatigue and recovery are determining factors in maintaining athletes' performance, especially in soccer. This study aimed to investigate the effect of chronic direct transcranial stimulation on fatigue and recovery among football players.
 Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study utilized a pre-test and post-test design. The population consisted of male football players over 18 years old in Khorramabad, Iran, and 20 cases were randomly selected. A 20-minute anodal stimulation protocol at an intensity of 2 mA was applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In total, 12 transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) sessions were administered over a four-week period, and the same variables were assessed again at the end of the intervention. The variables included HRV, HbO₂, RPE, vertical jump, salivary lactate, and recovery. Measurements were performed using pulse oximetry, RPE scale, Sargent test, saliva sampling, and TQR scale. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and analysis of covariance through SPSS software (version 22) at the 0.05 level.
Results: The results showed that 12 sessions of tDCS resulted in a significant increase in HRV (P=0.001) and a decrease in perceived fatigue pressure (P=0.001), in addition to a significant increase in vertical jump height (P=0.001) and improved recovery (P=0.001). On the other hand, this multi-session course did not show a significant effect on HbO₂ (P=0.823) and salivary lactate (P=0.085).
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that 12 sessions were able to improve some variables, such as HRV, jump height, recovery, and perceived pressure. These findings emphasize the importance of the cumulative and adaptive effects of tDCS. Overall, tDCS can be considered an auxiliary method in optimizing the performance and recovery of athletes.
