Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer has a high mortality rate due to its late stage. Breast self-examination increases the success of treatment and survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and practice of postmenopausal women in Khorramabad about breast self-examination.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a descriptive-analytical study that was performed on 333 postmenopausal women referring to health centers in Khorramabad in 1399 using cluster sampling. The questionnaire contained demographic characteristics and variables of knowledge and practice of breast self-examination. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 22 and Spearman correlation, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests.
Results: The mean age of the subjects was 8.13±55.13. 55% of women had moderate knowledge and 43.8% had moderate performance. The most common source of information was through health center staff (52.9%). There was a direct and moderate correlation between knowledge and practice of individuals regarding breast self-examination (r = 0.53, p <0.001). Between knowledge and practice with chest radiographic history variables, physician referral, class attendance history (P <0.05). There was also a statistically significant relationship between practice and marital status (P <0.05).
Conclusion: The level of knowledge and practice of breast self-examination in postmenopausal women was moderate. Due to the significant relationship between knowledge and practice variables with behaviors such as attending classes, visiting a doctor, designing educational programs to encourage postmenopausal women to perform breast self-examination is recommended.
