Background: Dental malpractice claims have increased in recent years. Investigating the reasons for dental malpractice complaints would help dental practitioners overcome this issue by providing high-quality service and promoting patient safety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malpractice in dentistry and its possible causes in Khorramabad, Iran during 2012-2015.
Materials and Methods: We reviewed all closed dental malpractice cases registered in Khorramabad Medical System during 2012-2015 and evaluated contributing factors including demographic factors and type of malpractice. Data analysis was done by SPSS software version
Results: Among 73 complaint cases, 65 cases were investigated in the current study. The average age of the patients was 33.49±10.65. Most of the complainants were women (59.3%), in the age range of 30-45 years (41.5%), had a university degree (26.2%), or a diploma (24.6%), and were city residents (70.8%). The maximum interval between the time of treatment and the time of complaint registration was less than one year (67.7%). The majority of complaints were against male practitioners (86.2%), and was related to general dentists (53.8%). The most frequent final votes were found to be negligence (47.7%). The majority of complaints were from oral surgery specialty (33.8%) followed by endodontics (32.3%).
Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, most of the charged dentists were general dentists, notably in the field of oral surgery. Therefore, to reduce the incidence of such errors and limit their consequences, it is necessary to develop control strategies, and to improve education and training for dental practitioners.
